| The GP2 series started in 2005 and is seen by most as a proving ground for young drivers looking to get into Formula One, in fact the first 2 series winners already have F1 drives, Nico Rosberg who now drives for Williams won the title in 2005, with Heikki Kovalainen (Renault) and Scott Speed (Tora Rosso) 2nd and 3rd respectively. The title in 2006 went to none other than Britain's own Lewis Hamilton who after his first 4 F1 races, leads the world championship. Nelson Piquet jnr, now a Renault test driver, finished second. | | | | |
| The GP2 car looks very similar to an F1 car, but there are in fact many differences. The engine is a purpose built Renault 4 litre V8, producing 600bhp @ 10,000rpm. This puts its power through a 6 speed sequencial gearbox, with paddle shift from the carbon steering wheel. Carbon brake discs and pads are used to slow the car from its top speed of around 200mph, and can create 3.2g during maximum braking. Pushrod double wishbone suspension is used front and rear with KONI 2822 series 4 way adjustable racing dampers. |
| Koni have been an active supporter of GP2 since its launch in 2005 and worked together with the organisors and teams to provide the best possible dampers to each driver. This invovement has helped with the devolpment of the 2822 series dampers, which has now been reduced in diameter, to give easier fitment, and lightened in weight. All 2822 dampers now have low-friction parts inside. | |
